Once a rural conclave with a few family practitioners and midwives here and there, Brunswick County now boasts several hospitals and medical centers and dozens of specialized physicians, medical staff and personal long-term care facilities.

Locally, Brunswick-Community-Hospital operates a 60-bed acute care facility offering a variety of general medical/surgical services and specialties. The medical services include neurology, pulmonology, full emergency services, intensive and cardiac care, nuclear medicine, CAT scan, MRI, mammography, EEG, EKG, physical therapy and pain management.

The hospital also provides a variety of surgical services such as; obstetrics and gynecological care, neurosurgery, ear, nose and throat, orthopedic,urological, plastic and reconstructive, eye,podiatric, and general. Long-term nursing care is available in three facilities in the area, as are in-home medical assistance and adult day care. Assisited living is also availible. These facilities allow individuals who need some assistance to continue to live as independently as possible, maintaining their privacy, while receiving supportive, quality care. Physician and medical services are available, along with laundry services, cultural, religious and recreational activities.

Care and counseling for the terminally ill and their families are provided by Lower Cape Fear Hospice, which has served the area since 1980. Hospice recently opened the care center in nearby Wilmington, which serves those in the region who are not able to have care provided in their homes. Just three hours away are the internationally respected medical centers at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke University.

Specialized veterinary care is available through the school at NC State University in Raleigh. Extensive veterinary care is available throughout the region, as are equine farrier service and animal grooming. Licensed wildlife rehabilitators are located in Supply and in Southport.
