Even in the southern part of Heaven, there are rules and regulations, permits and licenses required to start a business. Following are a few guidelines to help you get started. Don’t forget also to contact the Brunswick County Economic Development Commission.
Privilege License. If your business is located in an incorporated city or town you'll need a privilege license from both the state and the town. The town will issue a license after the state licenses are acquired. If the business will be outside of any incorporated town, the state privilege license is required. If your business will be selling alcohol, permitting by the North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission is required as is a county permit. The county permit can be obtained only after getting the state license. Restaurant Permit. If the business will have a restaurant or facility where food or drinks will be served to the public, a thorough inspection by the Brunswick County Health Department is required. Building Permits. All residential and commercial construction of 100 square feet and up requires a building permit in Brunswick County. Additionally, each municipality may have permitting requirements. Fees are based on a combination of heated space, unheated space, open covered space, and uncovered open space. Permits for commercial construction are issued only to commercially licensed North Carolina building contractors. For residential construction, either a state licensed builder or the property owner may obtain the license. To obtain a commercial building permit, the contractor must provide the following to the county: · Tax parcel number · Septic permits or sewer information · Building owner's name, address, and phone number · Contractor's address, phone number and NC State Builders License Number · Directions to the property · CAMA/FEMA/State permits (where applicable) · Plot Plans locating the property on the surveyed property · Three copies of detailed, to-scale blueprints or comparable plans which include handicap facilities. On small buildings, owner may draw his own plans, but plans must be drawn to scale.
