By Land
Brunswick County is served by a modern system of four-lane highways. Interstate 95 & US Highway 17 are both north/south four-lane highways running from New York to Florida. Interstate 40 is an east/west four-lane interstate running from California to Wilmington, North Carolina. Several highway extensions are being planned for Brunswick County. Interstate 74 is a planned interstate from Rockingham, NC to Brunswick County.
US Highway 74/76 is an east/west four-lane route from Charlotte.

By Sea
The Intracoastal Waterway
When you are living in a coastal paradise, you may prefer to do your traveling by boat. The depth is maintained at 12' mean low water by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The waterway serves barge traffic along a north/south route. You can gain ocean access by way of

The Cape Fear River
This river is maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers and has a mean-low water depth of 42' from the Atlantic Ocean Bar to Wilmington.

Ferry Service
The North Carolina Ferry System operates 24 ferry vessels, one dredge and numerous support vessels. There are seven routes. Year-round ferry service is available from Southport to Bald Head Island and to New Hanover County. From Southport to Fort Fisher, you will depart from the Southport ferry terminal in Brunswick County and travel to the Fort Fisher terminal in New Hanover County. The short ferry ride gives you the best view of the remnants of Price Creek Lighthouse, the only remaining vestige of a chain of lighthouses constructed between 1845 and 1851 from Wilmington to the mouth of the Cape Fear River. During the Civil War, Confederate troops used the lighthouse to communicate with officers at Fort Fisher. It was closed in 1867. The trip takes about 30 minutes. The ferry can hold about 38 cars at one crossing. Ferries depart every forty-five minutes from 7:00 am to 4:45 pm. The cost for a ferry ticket is $.50 for pedestrian, $1.00 for bicycle, $3.00 for Motorcycles, $3.00 for vehicle and/or trailer up to twenty feet long and $6.00 for a vehicle and/or trailer in excess of twenty feet.

By Air

Myrtle Beach International Airport located about 45 minutes south of Shallotte, offers direct flights to major destinations from several major US airlines, including AirTran, ASA, ComAir, Continental, Delta, Spirit and US Airways. Brunswick County Airport has a 4,000 foot by 75-foot runway, which is paved and lighted. Services include: fuel, airplane maintenance, repairs and flight instruction.

Ocean Isle Airport has a 4,000-foot by 75-foot runway, which is paved and lighted. Tie down service available.
