The waters surrounding Brunswick County are rich with treasures for the sport fisherman. Each local beach has a full-service pier where anglers won't be disappointed.
Spots, spanish mackerel and more run in the winter. Bluefish and spots run in the fall. The salt marshes are known for winter trout, channel bass and croaker. Shrimp, flounder and drum can be caught in the spring and summer months.
If it is shellfish you are seeking, you have struck gold again! Oysters and clams are abundant along the Intracoastal Waterway and back bay areas.
Ocean acccess is available through Lockwood Folly Inlet, Shallotte Inlet and Little River Inlet. From these points, charters are available to take you to the trophies of the Gulf Stream, where red snapper, grouper, tuna and more are plentiful.
Recreational fresh water fishing licenses are required by law. Residents pay $35 and non-residents will pay $250 for a year license. You can obtain your license from the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Division in Wilmington, phone (800) 249-4537. Or you can pay an additional $1 fee and buy your license at the Wal-Mart on Main Street in Shallotte, NC, telephone: (910) 249-4537.
