Education
Students in the region enjoy modern classroom and athletic facilities from preschool through college. Beginning with licensed child care facilities, educational opportunities continued through the public and private secondary schools.
Postsecondary education is available through Brunswick Community College, which awards numerous associate degrees, certificates and diplomas. Programs include aquaculture, law enforcement, business, information systems, nursing and turfgrass management. A member of the North Carolina Community College System, Brunswick Community College provides a college transfer program. Expansion of the campus includes a new 38,000 square foot science/health/education building, and a new program for child care worker certification. Demand is strong for graduates of the fish farming and shellfish production management program, one of only a handful in the country. A new construction trades curriculum for high school students is strong with a center on campus to provide these classes to all county high schools. Scholarships and financial aid programs provide a low-cost education to Brunswick County residents.
With 28 full-time and 111 part-time instructors, the college is able to offer classes at its main campus in Supply as well as in Leland and Southport. Weekend classes are offered in both Supply and Leland. Cultural programs for the BCC Odell Williamson Auditorium are also strong at the school. Continuing education courses are offered at each campus as well as various locations throughout the county.
Brunswick Community College offers support to adults with developmental disabilities through Brunswick Interagency Program, enabling then to develop to their ultimate potential and to achieve a level of independence.
Four-year and graduate degrees are offered at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, one of the sixteen campuses of the University of North Carolina system. Horry/Georgetown Technical College and Coastal Carolina University are also nearby in the Myrtle Beach area. Speacilized training is available in office management, computer technology, secretarial and other fields in local private institutions.
