On Saturday, August 30, 2003, 168 boats participated in the annual South Brunswick Islands King Classic King Mackerel Tournament sponsored by Waste Industries, Inc. and Lee Electrical. 86 King Mackerels were caught and entered into the Tournament. This was the 15th year for the annual one-day Tournament held each Labor Day weekend, coordinated by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. $100,000 in prize money was up for grabs at this year's Tournament. The Awards Ceremony was held Saturday night at Holden Beach Marina.
This year’s big winner was Captain Juan Madrano and the crew of the El Intruso. The crew of the El Intruso, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, reeled in a King Mackerel weighing 38.3 pounds and won first place and took home over $12,600 in cash and prizes.
Primary Prizes were given out for 1st through 25th Place and 50th Place.
Secondary Prizes were awarded to: Largest Mackerel Caught on a Contender boat, Largest Mackerel caught on a boat with a Gore T-Top, Lady Angler, Junior Angler. First, Second and Third Place prizes were also awarded to crews in boats 23’ and under.
