As if enjoying the communities is not enough, several well-planned events take place each year for residents and visitors alike.
Holden Beach celebrates its heritage with A Day at the Docks in April when the local charter fishing fleet gives boat rides. Food and music highlight the event. North Carolina Festival by the Sea in Holden Beach features arts and crafts, sand castle building contest, kite flying and a hotly contested horseshoe championship. The festival includes a street parade and a street dance. 1-800-426-6644
North Carolina Fourth of July Festival has been celebrated in Southport for more than 200 years. The naturalization ceremony, arts and crafts booths, food vendors, 5K Freedom Run/Walk, parade, concerts and live stage entertainment are enjoyed by more than 50,000 people. South Brunswick Islands King Classic tournament is Labor Day weekend annually. Cash prizes go to the anglers catching the largest king mackerel. This tournament is SKA sanctioned and encourages family fishing by offering lady and junior angler prizes. 910-754-6644.
The North Carolina Oyster Festival at Ocean Isle Beach is always the third week in October. Serving steamed oysters, shrimp and fish as well as ethnic food, the Festival crowns the North Carolina Oyster Shucking Champion. Past local winners have earned national and world championship titles. The 22nd annual festival is October 19 and 20. In addition to more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, visitors can expect children's activities, live entertainment from such well-known regional artists as the Embers and Band of Oz, and more.
